It should start to be clear now how it operates. The bottom of the knob clicks into the recess in the top hinge plate so even if the knob is loose it will not fold when you are riding.

Does this arrangement provide a 'better' fold than the production one do you think? ie is it more compact? I'm trying to find a relatively simple way to achieve a smaller folded bike for my very small Fiat car and wondered if the offset pivot might be an 'improvement' of sorts. Dreaming?....
