What looks like a bolt is in fact a stud that is a tight sliding fit with the 'hooked part of the bottom plate.

Looks overly sturdy. I wonder if they used arc welding or a flame ? Not the smoothest joints but strong. Thanks for the photos. What year was this 1967 or thereabouts.?
