Well overdue! But it has been difficult getting a nice day for a completion photo. Very happy with the finished bike.

The versatile AW Hub kinda grows on you once you start tinkering with rear cog sizes and are prepared to stick with either a 46 or 48 cottered crank. Dropping down from what seems to be either a standard 18 or 16t cog to 15,14,or 13 actually makes the low and medium (1:1) gear much more useable in real world conditions..and it's nice to have 3rd gear not spin out on the flats or downhill. Enjoy !


Thanks Melo :) I agree - with well-chosen sprockets the three gears of the AW are as many as any of us need most of the time. I can do most of the hills around here on the middle, and all the steep ones on the low - even if it is a bit of a push on some. Worth it for the fast high.
I may have to revise the 'project complete' tag though. Those brake levers were lying unused in my garage. Being an incurable tinkerer I'm thinking of upgrading them to aero ones for a cleaner look without all that cable flapping about. Watch this space ;)

This started out with me looking for an old 3-speed frame for a fixie project! The Twenty is a design classic, but I chose a Kingpin in the end because the extra strut for the head tube just looks a little bit more engineered, and it's a better ride according to some. This is a 1975 frame, and I was pleased to get a non-folder with its slightly cleaner lines (though some blogs suggest the folder is a bit longer). In the end I couldn't bear to abandon the AW hub, so the fixie idea got abandoned. I replaced the original chromed-steel 440mm rims with alloy Alienation Ankle Biter 451mm ones, finished off with Maxxis DTH 37-451 tyres. I chose the bullhorn bars to give an 'on the drops' riding position. These are fitted using a 'Palk' riser (cut down mtb bars - thanks Dave), via an ITM stem. My height dictated a new seat pin, and the riding position the sportier Charge Spoon saddle. Finally, a 48T chainset to replace the original 46T, and 13T sprocket to replace the original 16T, gives me gears at 57, 76 and 103 inches (on a 20.5" effective wheel diameter). Conceived as a fast commuter bike, but I love it so much here it is fitted out with pump and bottle-cage for distance/touring.

Still have to do that fixie project now?
