Thanks Philip, I ended up using some halfords wheel 'steel' coloured spray that seemed a pretty close match to the original grey on the chainguard. Doesn't look too shabby at all once under lacquer.

Luckily I still have the can. Painters Touch brand Winter Grey, from B&Q or similar. I bought the can a couple of years ago, so not sure if it is still available, although something similar may well be.

I think I will have to respray the rusty hockey stick guard on the Hercules and the colour look s quite similar. I may just about be able to save the 'Hercules' chain guard decal/sticker /decal as the paint is now a separated layer clinging on to rust ...
Methinks they skimped on the bare metal primer in Italy with this part of the frame..:)....

It is a respray, with home-made decals, new saddle, tyres etc.
It seems to be Italian made, but a different design to the Hercules Compact.
